The main purpose of this project is to utilizes by-product of palm oil tree which is usually discarded as waste and extract the lignin content within the Empty Fruit Bunch(EFB) and convert it into a form of EFB cement retarder (Lignosulfonate) that can be utilized in a oil well cement to increase the setting time, in order to ensure the cement reach the correct places. The objective of this project is to 1) To extract lignin from EFB and 2) To synthesis lignin to retarder and characterize its properties. Then the scope of study includes 1)Extracting lignin from EFB via ultrasonication, 2) Synthesising the EFB retarder using the hydrolysis and sulfonation method and 3) Characterising the EFB retarder via scanning electron microscopy (SEM. The results for SEM (2.67 μm particle size), TGA (75°C thermal stability increase), FTIR (functional group retention), and GC-MS. Results confirmed lignin extraction and successful synthesis of thermally stable retarders
