One of the resistances that may or may not occur based on the parameter of the environment of the field is gas hydrate which is an ice-like structure which can block the pipeline and leading to a potential blowout, but it can be mitigated using chemical inhibition like Thermodynamic Hydrate Inhibitor (THI) and Kinetic Hydrate Inhibitor (KHI). The aim of this study was to find the synergistic effect of both types of chemical inhibitor groups specifically Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) which is a part of THI and KHI respectively. In this study, the sample that were tested were Tetrahydrofuran (THF), THF with addition of MEG with different concentrations (10%, 20%, and 30%) as the base and the version with different concentration of PVP (0.0005wt% and 0.001wt%). The samples were placed inside a freezer and the morphology observed for every sample for the first few hours and periodically observed until the sample became fully hydrated. The obtained result showed that the trend for base sample with different concentrations of MEG followed the trend of previous studies that mainly focused on the same chemical. Meanwhile, the sample which has the addition of PVP was unexpectedly different from the common behavior of the chemical. This outcome was inevitable because of a few factors such as the condition of the environment, the upper limit of PVP in subcooling temperature, and the decrease in nucleation time with the increase of PVP concentration. The findings of this study could contribute to developing the most efficient and cost-effective combination of both groups of THI and KHI and lessen the risk either economically or safety of the field.
