POME's high organic content makes it difficult to treat using traditional techniques, which makes it an extreme risk to the environment. MFCs are a viable substitute since they use the metabolic activity of microorganisms to both clean wastewater and produce power. The study focused on adjusting HRT to improve MFC performance in terms of energy generation and organic pollutant degradation. The experiments were carried out over a couple of weeks under various HRT circumstances, from HRT 7 days decrease to HRT 5 days. Key parameters such as Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS), Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids (MLVSS), COD removal efficiency, Oil and Grease (O&G) removal efficiency, and electrical generation were measured. According to the results, higher HRT considerably increased treatment efficiency by improving electrical generation and removing COD and O&G at higher rates. Long-term HRT increased microbial stability and proliferation, which improved organic matter decomposition and MFC performance overall. The results indicate that in MFC-based systems, regulating HRT is essential for optimizing energy recovery and wastewater treatment efficiency.
