Summary: With the development of modernization construction, housing for Chinese people has seen tremendous changes. Not only are people’s material conditions greatly improved, people’s ideas about life and interpersonal relationships have developed too along with the times. Jinyuchi Community in Beijing is such an example. Several hundred years ago, Jinyuchi was where the imperial family bred gold fishes. In the early 20th century, it became a slum due to the chaos caused by war and social turbulence. After 1949, the Beijing municipal government has undertaken three major renovations for the Jinyuchi community. The narrow and dirty streets and lanes of the past have been turned into a beautiful garden community. Today, there are over 3100 households living here. Jinyuchi Community is like a big family, full of warmth, peace and joy, with the strong streak of humanity reminiscent of old Beijing, as well as the new vitality of the times.
