Grout is one of the many methods used to repair cracks in concrete. As the grout is mostly design to slip through into smalls opening into the concrete, it requires micro particles size as the main material in the grout mixing. Therefore, sea sand micro particles size is well suits the grout. By replacing standard sand with sea sand in grout mixing, the standard sieve method that normally applied for the standard sand can be skipped as the grain sizes of the sea sand is much smaller than the standard sand (river sand) and suits well for the design of grout material. A study has been conducted in order to investigate the engineering properties and the compressive strength of the sea sand. Chloride content experiments have been carried out in order to study engineering properties of the sea sand. In the first experiment the sea sand was submerged into distilled water and the result shows that the maximum duration for the chloride to dissolve into distilled water is 5 days. In the second chloride content experiment, the sea sand was rinsed to know how many time rinse process is required to leave as little as possible chloride in the sea sand. The result shows that 10 times rinse process is required to leave the sea sand with 5.6 mgIL CI-. In the compressive strength experiment, the mortar mix is using water/cement ratio 0.55 and cement/sea sand ratio! :3. The result shows that the compressive strength of the sea sand samples is only 4.55% lower compared with the control samples compressive strength. However, the compressive strength of the sea sand recorded is satisfactory for the sea sand to be used as the filler material for grout matrix. -Author
