The water quality of a stream is much affected by the activities taken place along it. Unfortunately, rapid urbanization around Sungai Kuantan increased the number of pollutants discharged to water body and deteriorates the water quality of the river. This study is mainly concerned on the water quality analysis for Sungai Kuantan at Sungai Lembing located in Kuantan, Pahang Daml Makmur within total length of 2 km. As one of beautiful river in Kuantan, Sungai Lembing is involved with many activities such as reareation, water supply, irrigation and so on. Two water quality standards used in the analysis are Water Quality Index (WQI) and Interim National Water Quality Standards (INWQS). Sampling station had been setup along the stream with five station which is 400 m for each station and the water sample is collected in the middle or the stream. Laboratory analysis is calculated using 7 parameters namely COD, BOD, SS, AN, DO, Total Coliform and E. Coli while pH, Turbidity and Temperature is measured on site. The natural activity of land use such as erosion, the impact of the existing drainage systems and surface runoff are identified as main contribution in the degradation of the water quality. The water quality of Sungai Lembing is still in the clean range and the recreation activities, fish, shellfish and wildlife, navigation activities and treated water transportation can be acceptable as the river have been classified into Class II. The cleanliness of the Sungai Lembing should be maintained or increased to ensure that the next generation will be benefit by that. The government should make it serious about protecting Malaysian rivers through the authorities such as DOE, DID and MPK before it is too late. Collaboration between the government and NGO will make the effect of precautions about the quality of rivers can be spread to community and people. -Author
