Dissertation note: Project paper (Bachelor of Chemical Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2009 Abstract: Malaysia is the main producer and exporter of oil palm based product in this world. With the massive size of this industry, there is no doubt that it will generate a lot of biomass products and until today these products haven’t been utilized to the fullest and one of these products is the oil palm frond (OPF). It has been proven from many researches that OPF has the potential to be made into papers but unfortunately the brightness achieved didn’t really fulfill the requirements for it to be commercialized. So in this work, the effects of bleaching on the properties of paper from OPF Soda-AQ pulp are studied. The OPF pulp was bleached at different time and temperature and the physical and optical properties of the papers made form it are studied. These properties are then compared between each sample and some conclusions were made. It appears that the leached pulp produced better quality papers compared to the unbleached pulp. Longer bleaching time and higher temperature produced brighter papers and it achieves the brightness for news print. However, the high temperature seems to deteriorate the fibers in the pulp when the bleaching period is long hence producing papers with poor physical properties.
