Dissertation note: Project paper (Bachelor of Chemical Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2010 Abstract: The present invention relates to grease composition for applications at severe and diverse range of operating temperatures, and cost-efficient method for producing same. The novel grease composition comprises Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) as thickener, and cooking oil as base oil. The grease composition exhibits high performance characteristics, efficient in extensive bearing conditions in wide range of industries with heavy duty equipments. Mixture of greases is formulated using a proportion of different amount of silicon oil versus waste cooking oil.10%-90%, 20%-80%, 30%-70%, 40%-60, 50%-50% and 60%-40% by weight. A simple method was used to formulate this grease which only needed 8 hours of heated agitation, and 5 hours of non heated agitation. The results of testing have been done on formulated grease (penetration test, oil separation test, ash content, viscosity and stability proves the formulation 60% of poly-methyl siloxane and 40% waste cooking oil novel grease composition is suitable for use in wide range of industries. From the economic point of view, it is very cheap compared with the commercial ones. The minimum cost for the Aeroshell greases is about RM 44/kg. The cost of the used cooking oil and spent bleaching earth is RM 0.30 and RM 0.50/kg respectively or less. The cost of production is RM 1.50/kg .Thus the cost of the new grease is RM 2.30/kg which is only 5.22% of the commercial grease price. Thus an estimated 95% is saved; which is a big achievement.
