Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2009 Abstract: Infiltration is a process when water seeps through the soil to the layer below by gravitational force. This process of occurs as precipitation falls on the catchment area and penetrates in to the soil. Infiltration rate is usually measured in the unit of mm/hr. Several factors that affect the infiltration are the type of soil, vegetation cover, initial soil condition, surface moisture, soil compaction, rainfall and temperature. The ways of decreasing the peak hour value of surface runoff of an area is by using storage basins in the infiltration technique. This study was carried out to determine the most suitable storage basin for all the eleven locations in the study area of University Malaysia Pahang, Gambang Kuantan. Both retention and detention basin can be used in all the locations but a limit for the use of retention basin. For the use of retention basin for the specific locations the infiltration rate should be more than 13 mm/hr. Sieve analysis test was conducted to obtain the type of soil for each location and the Double Ring Infiltrometer test was conducted determine the infiltration rate of each location. The soil sample was sieve and classified using United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) in order to determine the type of soil. The equation that is used is Horton’s Equation in this study. The type of soil that is classified is sand. The highest infiltration rate is at location J (Kolej Kediaman 2) with the rate of 101.7 mm/hr and the lowest is at location B (Sports Complex) with the rate of 22.1 mm/hr. the result indicates that more voids in the soil texture, the higher the infiltration rate of the said area. From the analysis all the location have infiltration rate more than 13 mm/hr, thus retention basin is applied for all the locations.
