Speed limits design for the access road from Federal Route 2 to East Coast Expressway via Gambang Toll Plaza / Nadjua Hanim bt Ismail

Speed is often related to the consequences of accident. The relationship between speed and accident is closely related, hence, the appropriate speed limit should be enforced. The access road to Gambang Toll has been opened to the public as an alternative way heading to East Coast Expressway since 2004. The traveling speed for an access road is supposed to be 10% to 20% less than the speed of the connecting road which is East Coast Expressway and the two Federal Routes. Since, the allowable speed on the expressway is 110 km/h and on the Federal Routes is 90 km/h, therefore the speed limit on the access road is supposed to be 80 km/h or lower. However, vehicles are often seen to be speeding more than 80 km/h due to lack of speed limit signage on the road. This situation may increase the possibility of road accidents to happen is probably high as the numbers of users has slightly increase day by day and the shared function of being the only access road to campus of Universiti Malaysia Pahang. Therefore, Spot Speed Study (by using the Radar Meter technique) is done to collect the data which would be useful in order to obtain the appropriate the design speed limit at the study area. Besides that, the probability of vehicles exceeding speed limit at the study area is determined and identified by using the Normal Distribution Method. From the results and analysis done, the design speed limit for car and lorry is 80 km/h while the speed limit for bus and motorcycle is 71 km/h and 75 km/h. All in all, this project has achieved the objectives in designing the appropriate speed limits for the study area and also in identifying the probability of vehicles exceeding the speed limits. -Author
