The choice of sewage treatment plants for any application depends on the quality of raw sewage, the quality of treated water and the economics resources available to pay for both capital cost and operating cost of the treatment plants. The performance of any sewage treatment plants does not only depend on the construction cost but will also include the cost and method of operation and maintenance, quality of effluent treated, internal, external and design factors. The objective of these studies is to compares and contrasts two of the most common types of package/mechanical plants used, which are Extended Aeration System (EA) and Rotating Biological Contactors System (RBC). The selected treatment plants are under the jurisdiction of Indah Water Konsortium Sdn. Bhd. (IWK), Kuantan. The performance of the treatment plants based on main parameters effluent quality such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Oil and Grease (OG), Suspended Solid (SS) and pH value. The analysis of secondary data shows the percentage differences of parameters concentration between both of systems, which is BOD with 79.3%, COD with 53%, OG with 73.3%, SS with 54.7% and pH with 17%. This means the parameters concentration for RBC system is more than EA system, it was found that the quality effluents from mechanical treatment plant without media are more efficient from the mechanical treatment plant with media. It seemed obvious that the Extended Aeration System is easy of operation and also giving better effluent standard.
