Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang -- 2010 Abstract: The recent trend in waste management is to use the industrial wastewater in usable product. Homemade Batik textile wastewater in Malaysia is currently being wasted through direct discharge into waterways. With proper water quality control, this effluent can also be considered as a potential water resource for specific applications. A few incentives were done to reuse textile wastewater for construction purpose which is for concrete mix design, so that the shortage in water can be greatly reduced and the wastewater can be suitably disposed for safe guarding the environment. The research is conducted to study the characteristic of textile wastewater at different location which is Desa Murni and Bukit Sagu and to study the possibility of usage of textile wastewater in concrete production. In this paper, the characteristic of mix ratio composition using 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of textile wastewater and tap water was tested using suitable parameters. Grade 30 concrete mix design that was prepared using Ordinary Portland Cement, tap water and textile wastewater were tested to determine the mechanical properties of concrete. The research shows that two parameters of Desa Murni textile wastewater exceed the Standard B Environment Quality limitations which are COD and Oil and Grease. While, parameter tested for Bukit Sagu textile wastewater that exceed the Standard B limit are COD, Total Suspended Solid and Oil and Grease. All parameter tested from the two locations were found under the limitation of Malaysia Concrete Mixing Water Limit except for pH of Desa Murni textile wastewater. Concrete mixing water acceptable with 20% of textile wastewater as optimum percentage in contributing to the higher strength of concrete in the Compressive strength test, Flexural strength test and Slump test for fresh concrete.
