Three dimensional (3D) Lamp Planner is a standalone system developed to explore 3D lamp designs. Different groups of users can explore and modify lamp designs in many kinds of virtual interior environments. Within the environments, different types of lamp designs and effects can be visualized realistically around 360 degrees. Software Unity 3D Pro and Autodesk Maya 2012 are used for the development of this system. The system provides some built-in basic lighting fixtures for different environment templates. A user friendly graphical user interface has been developed for the users to choose different design variables and input the corresponding parameters effectively. Upon finishing the designs, the users‟ behaviour and preferences can be analysed for forecasting the trend in lamp design. In particular, the Lamp Design and Lighting Effect Index (LDLEI) is defined for measuring the importance on the choices of different lamp design and environmental factors. Three measures, frequency, T-test and one-way ANOVA using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), were also used to determine the effects of lamp design and environmental variables. The variables are lamp shade, lamp texture, lamp colour, light colour, light‟s switch on or off, floor texture, floor colour, wall texture and wall colour. In addition, a complete statistical analysis on lamp designs and environmental effects have been conducted which revealed that the users‟ behaviours have significant impact on the choices of different lamp design and environmental parameters. A survey has been performed for the testing of the system which concluded that 90% of the participants are satisfied with the 3D Lamp Planner. The achievement of the system supports the individual and academic users, manufacturers, and companies to enhance the efficiency of their work. The companies can use the system to conduct surveys on the latest market trend in lamp design, or perform any statistical or functional analysis.
