Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project Paper (Bachelors of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2016 Abstract: Nowadays, depletion of non-renewable materials has become an issue. The numbers of non-renewable materials are increasing by year. It can cause country shortage of non-renewable materials. Besides that, the numbers of demand for lightweight aggregate are increasing. Many contractors want to reduce the cost of the construction, and also the materials they use are acceptable in construction site. To fulfil this requirement, proposed lightweight brick using expanded polystyrene beads must be able to reduce the density and maintain strength of the lightweight brick. The main objective this research is to determine the effect of polystyrene lightweight brick towards mechanical properties. Other objectives is to determine the percentage shrinkage of polystyrene lightweight brick. The method of analysis consists of three phases which are the planning, analysis and design. Four types of mixture have been tested. The specimens are control sample, 16.7 % of expanded polystyrene, 33.3 % of expanded polystyrene, and 50 % of expanded polystyrene. The standard size of lightweight brick is 215 mm x 102.5 mm x 65 mm were prepared in this study. The highest 28 day compressive strength was achieved by 33.3 % of expanded polystyrene which is 3.942 N/mm2. Meanwhile, the lowest 28-day compressive strength was achieved by 50 % of expanded polystyrene, which is 2.586 N/mm2. The specimen with contain more EPS experience more percentage shrinkage which is 3.2 % for 50 % of expanded polystyrene at 56 days. This shows that lightweight brick using expanded polystyrene has a good potential in the lightweight brick industry.
