Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007 Abstract: Nowadays, water pollution problem has become serious national issues. The increasing of solid wastes, oil and grease generated from cafeterias or restaurants also had contributed to this problem. Cafeteria that operated daily in Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) generates lots of food waste, oil and grease and could produced water pollution. A study was conducted to evaluate the quality of wastewater from the cafeteria. Two main objectives of the study are to evaluate the quality of wastewater from UMP student's cafeteria and to determine the effectiveness of sullage trap built at UMP student's cafeteria. Wastewater from three points were taken and tested in UMP's Environmental Laboratory. The parameters tested are pH, Suspended Solids (SS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Oil and Grease, Ammonia Nitrogen (AN), Nitrite and Nitrate. Observation is also conducted to evaluate the performance of the trap. The results of test for the sample at inlet and outlet of the trap is compared to determine the effectiveness of trap and the sample of wastewater at point three, which is before it is being released to main drain and then directly to stream is evaluated according to the Environmental Quality Act 1974. The overall results indicate that the performance of the sullage trap is not satisfactory and most of the results of wastewater discharged did not fulfill the requirements stated in the Standard B of Environmental Quality Act 1974. The most critical parameter is oil and grease where the highest value of oil and grease recorded for the effluent is 503.7 mg/L. The second critical parameter is COD which is the highest value recorded was 847 mg/L for point three. It is 88% higher than the allowable value stated in Standard B, Environmental Quality Act 1974 which is 100 mg/L. Several actions must be taken in order to improve the wastewater quality and at the same time to control the sources of pollution. -Author
