Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project Paper (Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2017 Abstract: Mining activities can cause negative impact towards human health and also environment which is the presence of particulate matters in the air. This study was conducted to measure the mass concentration of particulate matters (TSP, PM10, PM2.5 and PM1) and to determine the I/O ratio of mass concentration of particulate matters within five different office building which is Company A, Company B, Company C, Company D and Company E included. The mass concentration of particulate matters were conducted within office building and carried out for 12 hour with time interval of 15 minutes. Based on this study, it shows that Company A and Company D are having an I/O ratio that more than 1 or equally to 1 compared with others companies that having an I/O ratio that less than 1 where less than 1 it indicates that outdoor sources are strong. For Company A and Company D, they have a highest reading of I/O ratio and it shows that the companies having a strong indoor source for particulate matters. It has been prove by the correlations of Company A sampling area that has an R² larger than 0.92 and not less than 0.72 which is 0.95, 0.96, 0.77 and 0.82 for TSP μg/m³, PM10 μg/m³, PM2.5 μg/m³ and PM1 μg/m³ readings respectively which means that the indoor concentration is well correlated with corresponding outdoor level. As for Company D which is the sampling area that has R2 larger than 0.92 and 0.72 which is 0.72, 0.74, 0.76 and 0.72 and this shows that the indoor concentrations well correlated with corresponding outdoor level at TSP μg/m³, PM10 μg/m³, PM2.5 μg/m³ and PM1 μg/m³ readings respectively. The correlations of this study are taking consideration of the wind direction and speed where during the sampling the weather is sunny and bright. The increasing of mass concentration indoor sources might be because of the factors of infiltration, deposition, and penetration of the office building. Besides that the location of the company and the activities of the company itself can contribute to the strong indoor sources and well correlations. A good ventilation system and good housekeeping should be implementing to reduce the increasing of mass concentration within office building.
