Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project Paper (Bachelors of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2018 Abstract: This study was undertaken to explore the potential of the alien plants water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) and water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) as phytoremediation aquatic macrophytes for nutrients (nitrate and phosphorus) removal and algal interception from eutrophic lake located at Kotasas Lakeside. Parameters such as BOD5, COD, TSS, Turbidity, nutrients and heavy metal were tested in this study. From this study, it was found that water lettuce and water hyacinth have different nutrients removal efficiency in the range of 82% up to 97%. Water lettuce exhibited great nitrate removal efficiency up to 97%. This result may be attributed to the longer roots with higher rhizofiltration capacity. However, water hyacinth showed constant nitrate and phosphorus removal efficiency with average 90% due to its large total root surface area. Besides that, water hyacinth show 96% and 88% of TSS and turbidity removal efficiency which can help to improve the clarity of lake water. All results had undergoes statistical analysis through one way ANOVA and the results showed p-value less than 0.05 for all parameters which indicated the phytoremediation had significance effect between control sample and both aquatic plants. From the result obtained, it proved that the phytoremediation technology can effectively reduced the nutrients content and water hyacinth had better nutrients removal efficiency compared with water lettuce.
