Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007 Abstract: Water quality is the chemical and physical characterization of water. Water supply in Malaysia consists of 97% surface water, with groundwater making up the remaining 3%. Both community and private sources of drinking water are susceptible to a myriad of chemical contaminants, biological pollutants and nuisance water problems that may vary depending on site conditions and other factors. Some of the more common chemical pollutants include pesticides, fertilizers, petroleum products, and industrial solvents. Some problem organisms, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa and algae, cause nuisance problems with taste and odor while others are potential pathogens. To obtain excellence and clean water for consumption, we need a good water treatment system that will not be affected by contaminants that can reduce the water quality. The objectives of this research are to determine the quality of water reservoir and to survey the effect of using the water among students in University Malaysia Pahang. Eight water quality parameters were analyzed which include biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), turbidity, pH value, chlorine, iron and lead. In this study, water quality monitoring was conducted at three selected reservoirs in University Malaysia Pahang. Determination of water quality can be determined by analyzing the water quality parameter using laboratory testing standard method according to Water and Wastewater Standard Method, 1998 and also using testing equipment like Spectrophotometer DR/4000, for water quality parameter testing. From the results obtained, all the parameters analyzed comply with World Health Organization (WHO) Drinking Water Guidelines, INTERIM National Water Quality Standards for Malaysia and Malaysian Standard. From the study conducted, it was found that parameter BOD, DO, turbidity, cWorine, iron and lead are not within the limit that has been allowed which is stated at figure 4.1, 4.8, 4.18, 4.2, 4.23 and 4.24. Hopefully this research will help to clarify the current situation of drinking water quality supply by JBA Pahang to University Malaysia Pahang's service reservoirs. This is because controlling and look up for the quality of drinking water is very necessary not only to satisfy the consumer, but also to prevent any diseases caused by water carrying agent. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that water supply in UMP is probability quite safe and clean. -Author
