Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007
Oil palm mesocarp is one of the components that produce palm oil. It can be reuse as one of the potential BIOPEST product for termite control. Instead for being just a waste, a study is carried out to prove that it can be reuse in order to reduce environmental pollution. Nowadays, termite problems occurred everywhere and cause a lot of damages. The objectives of the study are to produce oil palm mesocarp as one of the artificial bait product in order to attract termites. Sample of mesocarp is taken at the Felda Palm Oil Industry Sdn Bhd at Lepar Hilir, Gambang, Kuantan. First, mesocarp itself without any additional sugar or chemicals is divided into 5 samples and placed at study field, at Seri Damai Tengah Village, Jaya Gading, Kuantan. The duration is 3 days and the observations are made 3 times. Then, samples preparation is made in the laboratory. 9 samples of mesocarp are prepared in 9 perforated containers and labeled from 1 to 9. 350 gram of sugar is dissolved in 700 ml of water to produce sucrose dissolvent of 50 % concentration. The dissolvent is then divided into 9 different concentrations and is diluted in 200 ml distilled water. Different concentration of sucrose is added into 9 samples of the meso carp and they are placed at different locations in the store room at the study field. This method is repeated 6 times. The results show that mesocarp itself cannot attract termites at all while the sucrose mesocarp can attract numbers of termites. The highest numbers of termites attracted is sample which contains 40 ml of sucrose that is 10 % concentration. This proved that termite's interest is cellulose. The cost of mesocarp with average weight is 30 gram and the concentration of 10 % is only RM 0.11. From the study, mesocarp can be reuse as to be produce as one of the environmental friendly product in order to control termite problems beside decrease the environmental pollution. Sugar is added to increase sucrose level in mesocarp so that termites are attracted to it. In the other words, it can be produce as one of the artificial bait for termite control with a cheaper cost. -Author
