Subject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering)) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2014 Abstract: A structure can has sufficient stability if no faces any geotechnical problems. The shear strength and bearing capacity are important characteristics of any soil foundation and soil structure. A soil foundation consists of weak bearing capacity and as to reduce magnitude of damage upon structure, natural mixed soil technique is one of the best options to keep structure out of great danger. In this research work, the natural soil has been selected. It is weakest soils among all in the study area. This is an experimental research work, based on evaluation of micro and macro properties of mixed soil. The shear strength parameters of mixed soil have been analyzed. In this work the basic materials are natural soil of Pahang and commercial kaolin. The kaolin has been treated by heat to modify mineralogy characteristics of that. The method of specimen preparation is mixed soil technique. The materials have been mixed based on weight ratio. The basic and advance soil mechanics experimental, XRD, EDAX and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) tests have been done in Geotechnical and Central laboratories of Universiti Malaysia Pahang. The investigation on microstructure and mechanical properties of mixed soil had been performed, to understand relationship between micro and mechanical properties of mixed soil. The effects of natural - kaolin mixture on unit weight, cohesive and internal angle of friction of mixed soils have been identified. The results indicated appropriate soil mixture improves shear strength parameters through micro properties modification. It has been observed that, in some cases cohesive and the internal angle of friction of soil does not have direct collaboration. The work can be applied for ground improvements based on identify suitable minerals presence in soil. The results help to develop mixed soil technique standard. The further research works could be done are included, simulate mixed soil in situ, use advance mineralogy techniques, increase level of heat on the kaolin, apply the effect of dynamic force on specimens and test other type of soils
