Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project Paper (Bachelors of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2017 Abstract: Timber is one of the natural building materials used in the construction. This material has a lot of advantages and generally timber is not toxic and do not leak chemical vapor in to the building. Timber also is low in production energy and easy to work. However, this material is no longer used because of the strength of wood is not able to withstand heavy loads and also depending on the moisture content in the wood. In Malaysia, technical knowledge of wood is still lacking so that most of old timber structure especially bridges has been replaced with concrete. The purpose of this study was to identify the flexural strength deflection of timber beam strengthened with steel rod and steel plate. The objective of this study was to determine the ultimate load, ultimate moment and deflection of strengthened timber beam. The study was conducted at heavy structure laboratory in University Malaysia Pahang (UMP). In order to get an accurate result, 3 samples were used in this experiment and compared to 3 samples of control timber beam. Tensile test were conducted to ensure the characteristic strength of steel rod is achieved. Flexural bending test were conducted to determine the ultimate structural properties for control timber beam and strengthened timber beam in term of ultimate load, deflection, and stress and strain using Magnus Frame test machine. To ensure the research to reach its objectives, all the procedures were prepared accordingly in order the research run smoothly from the beginning until the end. The samples were prepared with the same properties. Based upon the result obtained from this research, the following significant conclusions were drawn. First, from the experimental investigation it is observed that the load carry capacity of the strengthened timber beam reach its expected result but cannot verify the increment percentage the timber beam have different density which have different strength. Based on the observation the strengthened timber beam shows that the strengthened materials really did increase the strength of timber beam. Second, from the test carried out, the failure was occur at timber structure and there is no failure with the strengthening materials. As for sample ST1, there is a failure at sikadur-30 bonding where the steel plate was partially detached with the timber beam.
