Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project Paper (Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Biotechnology) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2017 Abstract: Azolla Filliculoides is a small aquatic fern and free-floating on the surface of the water. It is one of fastest growing plant and have very high productivity as it has doubling time 7-8 days. Due to high nutritional content in the Azolla, research and promotion to use Azolla sp. feed stock is increased. The objective of this study is to investigate biomass production of Azolla using aquaponics system. Next is to characterize the nutritional content of the Azolla-based pellet. Lastly is to determine the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) and cost benefit analysis of the fishes fed with Azolla pellet. The mineral content of Azolla is determined by using ICP-OES. Based on this study, Azolla have higher moisture, crude fat, fiber and ash content from the commercial pellet. Water quality analysis is done to monitor the water quality parameter. FCR for fishes fed with Azolla is higher which is on average 69.00 but more cost effective than using the commercial pellet as only RM 1.57 is spent for electricity. In conclusion, Azolla is suitable to be used as the supplement for fish diet to replace the expensive commercial pellet.
