Aggressive bauxite mining in Malaysia has caused serious problems towards humans and environments such as water pollution, air pollution and damaged to ecosystem of aquatic life. A research was commissioned to solve the issue of the contaminants. It is believed that the bauxite sample will eventually cause air pollution. The bauxite sample was collected near Kuantan Port, Kuantan and filtration method was carried out by using Hibiscus Cannabinus L (Kenaf) fibres. It is to partially remove toxins readily available in the air. A prototype is fabricated to test the ability of Kenaf fibers. A sample of 8 cm volume is placed inside of the prototype. The condition such as wind speed and temperature were modified to be same as the actual condition on the site. The contaminated air had successfully been treated by using Kenaf fibre. The concentration of PM10 and concentration of harmful gas (HO2, Chlorine, Ammonia) have been reduced about 50% to 75% after filter by using Kenaf fibre filter. The result of the experiment without any Kenaf fibres for filtration but without any wind speed shows that the average value for PM10 is 0.026 mg/m3. The value for PM10 concentration with wind speed is higher compare with the one without it. The average value for concentration of PM10 with wind speed level 1 is 0.028 mg/m3, for wind speed level 2 the average value is 0.029 mg/m3 and 0.032mg/m3 for the wind speed level 3. The result for the prototype with Kenaf fibres have a lower average value compare with those without kenaf fibres. The average value of PM10 with wind speed level 1 is 0.013mg/m3, with wind speed level 2 is 0.007mg/m3 while the average value for wind speed level 3 is 0.006mg/m3. For all the other harmful gas such as HO2, Chlorine and Ammonia are much lower for the one with Kenaf fibres and are much higher average value of ppm for the one without any Kenaf fibre. The experiment has shown the capability of Hibuscus Cannabinus can be air treatment as it is less expensive and easily available in Malaysia. A further treatment receovery and reusability of the filter and coagulants for enhanced recovery of the pollutants has to be studied for their commercialization.
