Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project Paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang – 2019 Abstract: A research on the Rich in Magnesium Gypsum (MRSG), which is a waste produced by Lynas in Malaysia that extracts rare earth elements to produce a by-product known as Underwater Water (NUF) and Waste Water Waste (WLP). The study was conducted to evaluate the fertility of MRSG on Elaeis guineensis (palm oil), to study MRSG composition whether it is safe to use or not to rehabilitate the soil and compare MRSG composition with soil contaminant guidelines. Understanding the recovery of the bauxite mining area by using MRSG is not only rehabilitate the soil but instead improves the soil better than its original conditions. This research focuses only on laboratory tests under X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, CHNS analysis and soil pH meter measurements. After analysing, the data obtained in bauxite samples (C: 0.796%; H: 1.318%; N: 0.589%; S: 0.172%; Ca: 9.0mg/L; Mg: 0mg/L; K: 2.0mg/L; Na: 0.69mg/L), and the data for 1:2:7 sample (C: 0.698%; H: 2.126%; N: 1.015%; S: 1.872%; Ca: 342.0mg/L; Mg: 44.0mg/L; K: 3.0mg/L; Na: 7.66mg/L). While, the data for 1:3:6 sample (C: 0.781%; H: 2.278%; N: 1.096%; S: 2.081%; Ca: 481.0mg/L; Mg: 57.0mg/L; K: 4.0mg/L; Na: 11.49mg/L). The content of CEC value in bauxite sample is 0.407meq / 100g. The contents of the CEC values for samples 1:2:7 and 1:3:6 contains 116.36 and 153.84meq / 100g respectively. The results showed the pH values are between 6 to 8.5, the soil is considered suitable for soil fertility which is the many nutrients start to available. The pH value of 1:2:7 sample is 6.78 (slightly acid) and the pH value of 1:3:6 sample is 7.33 (neutral). However, soil pH for bauxite samples is less than 7 and categorized as acidic soil. In addition, the comparisons of the elements produced by the Dutch List Limit and the Soil Contamination Guidelines are shown in this study. MRSG has a positive impact after comparing with the guidelines where all the elements are complying and safe to use for the soil rehabilitation process. Experimental result from the tests in Central Laboratory showed that MRSG could bring about positive impact on Elaeis guineensis (palm oil) where it produced the positively charged nutrients which is Ca, Mg, Na and K. These soils are considered to be more fertile. The CEC value of MRSG was higher and that means the more cations can be hold the plant nutrients. The soil pH of MRSG was fell into a range of 6 – 8.5 which is ideal for agronomic crops and many nutrients start to available.
