Lean manufacturing is a systematic methodology to minimize waste while maximizing resource utilization which helps businesses become more effective and competitive in the marketplace. Lean manufacturing is about the enthusiasm for waste elimination. Any business can remain competitive if it is flexible enough to improve its manufacturing process continuously and systematically by eliminating waste, optimizing processes, and cutting unnecessary costs. However, most of the companies has limited source and not been provided with the optimum way to implement lean manufacturing and eliminate waste. This research aims to explore wastage assessment methods that have been used to implement lean manufacturing across all manufacturing sectors like automotive, electronics, plastic, textile, food, dairy, even services. Specifically, it investigates the most common lean tools to be utilized and their impact on an organization’s performance. In this context, a field observation was conducted and actual operation data was obtained for data collection and analysis. Field observation was deployed by identifying types of waste that occurred in the production line by using the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) method. The outcome results suggest that there are three most critical types of waste; reject, rework and cycle time waste. Furthermore, the findings also lead the organization to identify waste, translate the waste to cost and provide guidance for future improvement activities.
