Antioxidant properties refer to the ability of substances to neutralise or inhibit the effects of free radicals. Free radicals can cause oxidative stress, leading to cell damage, and inflammation. This study investigates the antioxidant properties and therapeutic potential of Kyllinga nemoralis (K. nemoralis) methanolic extract in managing skin allergies. The study focuses on the extract's phytochemical composition, antioxidant activity, and efficacy as an ingredient in a topical cream formulation. The phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the K. nemoralis methanolic extract have been evaluated by TPC and DPPH assay. The result has shown the presence of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of the crude extract and 10% K. nemoralis cream containing the extract. The major bioactive compounds such as sesquiterpenes and terpenoids were identified through GCMS analysis. A 10% K. nemoralis cream was formulated as the treatment for AD-like allergy rat models induced by 2,4- dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). The effectiveness of the 10% K. nemoralis cream formulated was observed on skin lesion recovery. The topical cream has shown a slight acceleration in skin barrier recovery compared to the experimental groups which reduced the mean scoring from 6.6 to 2.4. This indicates the treatment has enhanced the healing of skin lesions. This study highlights the antioxidant properties of the K. nemoralis extract with its potential therapeutic effect on AD-like skin lesions.
