Nanomaterials have emerged as promising modifiers for asphalt binders due to their sustainable nature and potential to enhance flexible pavement performance. Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA), known for its durability, stands to benefit from such enhancements. However, limited research exists on the mechanical behaviors of SMA incorporating nano titanium dioxide (nano-TiO₂). This study aims to evaluate the physical, morphological, and chemical characteristics of asphalt binder and SMA modified with nano-TiO₂. Laboratory tests including softening point, penetration, and rotational viscosity were conducted using 1–5% nano-TiO₂. Advanced chemical and morphology properties of modified bitumen are done through tests consist of Fourier Transform Infrared Analysis (FTIR),X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrocospy (SEM-EDX) which are applied for 2–4% nano titanium dioxide. These 2-4% samples are chosen due to their ability to influence the particles in certain amounts. It is further assessed in performance tests on asphalt mixtures like moisture susceptibility, resilient modulus, permanent deformation, and binder drain-down. In addition, mechanical property relationships and a dynamic creep model were established using finite element analysis. The findings show that nanotitanium dioxide enhances different binder properties at varying dosages, with improvements observed at 3% for softening point, 4% for penetration, and 1% for rotational viscosity. While 3% nano TiO₂ notably improves binder properties as can be seen from FTIR, XRD and SEM-EDX results. As for mixture performance, achieving a tensile strength ratio (TSR) of 108%, at 2% showing the lowest binder drain-down. Dynamic creep and resilient modulus also showed that 3% inclusion of nano titanium dioxide improve their behavior. The finite element analysis later is done to compare the laboratory and finite element results. Overall, after considering the improvement and influence nano titanium content has on the binder and the SMA mix, 3% is deemed the suitable content in overall improvement of stone mastic asphalt mix. This study demonstrates the potential of nano TiO₂ to enhance SMA’s mechanical behavior, particularly in abridging rutting, fatigue, and moisture related distresses.
