Salacca zalacca trunk-grafted-poly(acrylic acid)/NPK [SCZ-g-P(AAc)/NPK] was synthesised. The synthesis involved the Salacca Zalacca (SCZ) trunk fibre, acrylic acid (AA) monomer, N,N'-Methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) crosslinker, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) neutralization agents, ammonium persulfate (APS) initiator, and NPK-151515 fertilizers using in-situ polymerization. The material was mixed together and heated in the reactor until it reached 60°C, and after that, APS solution was added to the mixture, creating the gel structure. Hydrogels underwent different kinds of testing to determine the rate of water absorption until it reaches equilibrium, which SAP took around 4 hours, while SAPC and SRFH took 5 hours. The result of the swelling indicated the SRFH was the lowest, followed by SAPC and SAP. Water absorption capacity (WAC) was also measured, indicating SRFH is 93.96 (g/g), SAPC 120 (g/g), and SAP (128.94), which proved SRFH had the lowest WAC. The degradation of SRFH and SAP was measured to study the biodegradability of the hydrogel. It showed that SRFH lost 83% of its weight compared to SAP 71%. The characterisation of hydrogels by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to investigate the presence of functional groups. The downfall of peak at the range 3373 −1 in SRFH is different compared to SAPC and SAP. The morphological result of the SRFH and SAPC showed that SCZ trunk fibre was grafted into the gel in the scanning electron microscope. While EDX is able to compare the elements between SAP and SRFH, it indicated that N, P, and K are in existence in the SRFH.
