This study describes the effect of the addition of palm oil mill effluent (POME) on the characteristics of pellets formed from raw wood sawdust which has been torrefied as a potential solid fuel. A difference in wood waste (Meranti and Seraya) was used as a sample in this analysis. The characteristics of pellets formed such as density and strength at different compositions of binding agent (POME) and different torrefaction temperatures of waste wood were discussed in this research. The samples were torrefied at temperatures which were 240℃, 270℃, and 300℃ for 30 minutes. The sample composition of binder POME was 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, and 75:25. The torrefied samples were heated in a mold and for 14 days stored for density testing. The height, diameter, mass, volume, and density were determined. The calorific value of the torrefaction biomass was measured using a bomb calorimeter, taking every minute temperature until a constant value was reached. The pellet was analyzed through combustion analysis, Ash content, HHV, Tensile strength, and FTIR analysis to determine the characteristics of the pellet. Higher heating temperature causes mass loss due to thermal decomposition of the hemicellulose component of biomass. Pellets become brittle and breakable at high temperatures due to uneven biomass surface structure during torrefaction. Torrefied sawdust pellets have significantly higher compression strength, even at their lowest strength. FTIR analysis identifies functional groups in the sample, including O-H and C-H alkane groups, C=O bonds, and stretching of several C-OH and C-O-C bonds. HHV analysis indicated that adding POME had a minor impact on the sample's calorific value. Torrefied sawdust at temperatures of 270℃ pellets provides better performance. Adding POME improves pellet characteristics for torrefied pellets. Torrefied pellets had a slightly lower saturated moisture content and high density despite losing weight due to torrefaction.
