Activated carbon based on rubber seed shells has been successfully synthesized using various conditions: thermal activation and chemical activation. The sample was completely activated using potassium hydroxide at a concentration of 1.0M after being calcined for two hours at 500°C, 600°C, and 700°C. The functional group, surface area, and morphology of each sample were then determined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) apparatus. As the temperature rises, the FTIR characterization data demonstrate changes in the -OH, C=O, and C-O. Every functional group that has been described suggests that the activated carbon process has been completed satisfactorily. In contrast to activated carbon that has been calcined at 500°C, the morphological identification results demonstrate that at 700°C, the pore distribution is even and well-developed. Furthermore, the BOD and COD measurements demonstrate that, after filtering the contaminated water, activated carbon with an activating agent of KOH satisfies the required standard for domestic use. After all, the thermal activation and chemical activation, the water filtration will be built in the bottle by also adding another material such as pebbles, rough sand, fine sand, cotton, and mesh net. The activated carbon in the system will be in different volumes to examine the effectiveness of activated carbon adsorbing a broad spectrum of contaminants. All those findings support the possibility of using rubber seed shells based on activated carbon for water treatment.
