The main goal of this final year project was to explore the efficacy of coffee waste activated carbon (CWAC) as a viable medium for removing iron from aqueous solutions. With growing concerns about water contamination and the imperative for sustainable waste management, the utilization of CWAC presented an environmentally friendly solution to address water quality issues. The project initiated with the preparation and characterization of CWAC, emphasizing its porosity, surface area, and chemical properties. Subsequently, a factorial analysis was conducted to identify the optimal parameters influencing iron removal efficiency using CWAC. Parameters such as pH levels, contact time, initial Fe concentration, agitation speed, and CWAC dosage were systematically varied and analyzed to determine their individual and interactive effects on iron adsorption. The experiment involved testing 16 samples by varying five parameters. These parameters included initial Fe concentrations of 1.0 and 4.0 mg/L, adsorbent dosages of 0.1 and 0.3 g, pH levels and 2 and 10, contact times of 2 and 4 hours, and agitation speeds of 150 and 300 rpm. Results indicated that under conditions of pH 10, contact time of 4 hours, initial Fe concentration of 4 mg/L, agitation speed of 300 rpm, and adsorbent dosage of 0.3 g, CWAC exhibited remarkable iron removal capabilities, achieving a removal efficiency of 99.75%, equivalent to 3.99 mg/L iron. The factorial analysis further revealed significant interactions among certain parameters, highlighting the importance of simultaneously optimizing multiple variables for enhanced iron removal. For iron removal, factor C had the greatest impact, and factors B, D, A, and E also played significant roles. Among the parameters, Adsorbent Dosage (B), pH (C), and Agitation Speed (E) demonstrated high F values of 1153.03, 4881.64, and 2733.33, respectively, for iron removal. Thus, this final year project underscores the potential of coffee waste activated carbon as a practical alternative for iron removal in water treatment applications. Through a comprehensive factorial analysis, the study provides valuable insights into optimizing operational parameters, paving the way for further research and the implementation of CWAC.
