Treatment of palm oil wastewater, also known as palm oil mill effluent (POME), encounters various issues due to its complex structure and high organic content. According to data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board for 2012, Malaysia produced 99.85 million tonnes of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) every year. However, around 5-5.7 tonnes of water were required to sterilize the palm fruit bunches and clarify the extracted oil in order to generate 1 tonne of crude palm oil, with 50% of the water converted into palm oil mill effluent (POME). POME is a serious environmental contaminant in Malaysia. This study aims to produce effective treatment of Palm Oil Mill effluent for Tertiary and energy generated from solid waste from the same sources which is decanter cake and fibre. Bio - electrochemical Cell employing BECC system in treating different types of palm oil wastewater in degrading the COD, BOD, O&G, colour and turbidity value. Concentration of Bacteria in the systems will also affecting the BeCC condition. Results showed that palm oil mill Tertiary effluent (POMTE) has the good removal efficiency in terms of COD, BOD, O&G where the effluent removal percent are above 70%. Next, in terms of achieving the limit standard set by the Department of Environment (DOE), palm oil mill tertiary effluent (POMTE) has proven its efficiency by achieved the limits within 7 days. However, there are some suggestion on how to degrade the colour of POME, by using activated carbon in the system resulted in improved colour performance of POMTE wastewater. Colour of POMTE might be affected by nutrition supply, ambient conditions, and inhibitors. This can result in incomplete degradation of colorants, leading to an increase in colour in the tertiary effluent. Overall, optimizing condition and concentration of bacteria in treating Palm Oil Mill Effluent is crucial for efficient reducing Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and other analysis using Bio- electrochemical Cell.
