Membrane separation technology is widely known for high pollutant rejection method used to remove undesired small particles with pore diameters ranging from 0.0001 to 10 microns especially in wastewater treatment. In order to effectively remove the particles from wastewater effluent body, different types of organic and inorganic membrane can be used. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) represent a class of composite materials that combine a polymeric matrix with inorganic or organic fillers. These fillers, often in the form of nanoparticles or micro-sized particles, are incorporated into the polymer matrix to enhance the overall performance of the membrane. Therefore, this study aims to research on the study on the performance of graphene oxide incorporated with Polysulfone (PSF)/Graphene oxide (GO) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) for amine removal in aqueous solution. High amount amine is present in wastewater effluent and can harm the aquatic species and human life. The study was carried out at controlled conditions with different composition of graphene oxide raging form 0 wt% to 1wt% using N-methyl-2-Pyrrolidone as a solvent. The flat sheet membranes were cast on a casting machine with thickness of 0.15 mm and characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for morphology and size analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) to determine the functional groups. The amine rejection was tested using Gas chromatography Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID). Based on the findings, Polysulfone(PSF)/ 0.5 wt% Graphene oxide (GO) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) demonstrated highest amine rejection of 82%, which is 23% higher than Polysoulfone (PSF) membrane tested under ultrafiltration setup with pressure at 3 bar and the permeate flux was 0.101 L/m2/bar/hr. Hence, the use of nanofillers such as Graphene oxide(GO) in mixed matrix membranes shows positive results for improving the removal of amines in aqueous solutions, as evidenced by the increased rejection rate compared to Polysulfone(PSF) membrane. The research provides valuable insights into the potential application of mixed matrix membranes for water treatment and related processes.
