Biofloc culture has developed as a sustainable aquaculture approach, improving water quality and fish health through beneficial microbial populations while solving fundamental issues in traditional pangasius catfish (ikan patin) farming, such as poor management of water quality and disease control. Aeration is important in biofloc systems because it keeps dissolved oxygen levels stable, which is necessary for waste management and nutrient cycling. Driven by these challenges, this study attempted to investigate the effect of various aeration methods on measurements of water quality and the growth performance of pangasius catfish in biofloc culture systems. Methods involved setting up one biofloc tanks to be culture and another two tanks will be distributed for Pangasius catfish into it, each equipped with a different type of aeration system, air stones (AS) and stainless steel ring aerotube (AT). Water quality, growth parameters and biofloc volume were observed over 15 days. The findings showed that the volume of biofloc were 20 ml/L. Tanks equipped with aerotubes showed higher performance, with a weight gain of 82%, an average body weight of 12.3 g, and a specific growth rate of 54.76%. In comparison, tanks using air stones demonstrated lower values, with a weight gain of 49.2%, an average body weight of 7.38 g, and a specific growth rate of 37.47%. The value of feed conversion ratio in aerotube were 0.329 while in air stones were 0.549. Furthermore, the results for water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, level of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in both tanks were 7-8 mg/L, 6.5-7.5, 27–30°C, < 0.5 mg/L, < 1 mg/L, 0.4–1.3 mg/L, and respectively. Therefore, these findings highlight the potential of the stainless steel ring aerotube as one of efficient aeration type that improved water quality and higher growth performance pangasius catfish in biofloc culture.
