This study investigates the influence of gas loading on power number and mixing time in stirred tanks through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and experimental validation. Stirred tanks are vital in numerous industrial processes, and CFD provides a detailed, cost-effective alternative to traditional experimental methods for analyzing fluid flow and mixing dynamics. A 3D geometry of the stirred tank, including the impeller, baffles, and sparger, was developed using Gambit version 2.3.4, and simulations were conducted in Ansys Fluent. Results were validated using data from particle image velocimetry (PIV) studies by Geng et al., 2012, which examined liquid phase hydrodynamics in an aerated tank stirred by a half elliptical blade disk turbine (HEDT) under aerated conditions. The findings reveal that gas loading has a significant effect on power number and mixing time, with increased turbulent kinetic energy and altered liquid velocity patterns observed in the presence of gas. CFD accurately replicated flow patterns and gas-liquid interactions, demonstrating its reliability in modeling such systems. This integrated computational and experimental approach offers valuable insights for optimizing gas-liquid dispersion in industrial stirred tank applications.
