Rice husk, the outer shell of the rice grain, when burned yields rice husk ash (RHA), which is rich in silica content and is suitable for fire retardant applications. To investigate the effects of different rice husk particle sizes on the fire retardant properties of epoxy resin coatings, the study entails producing RHA epoxy resin by varying the RHA particle size to get the optimal formulation. The study compares the influence of treated and untreated RHA on composite properties. Various sizes (25, 45, 63, 90 and 106 μm) of filler with constant weight (30%) are combined with epoxy resin and defined by various tests like Tensile test, Thermal stability by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), moisture absorption test, Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis (FTIR) test, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to discover the ideal formulation. The experiment is then repeated by using the optimum size to evaluate the mechanical characteristics and fire resistance (tested by UL94 test) of treated against untreated RHA particles. This study shows that. optimizing of the particle size of rice husk ash, especially those treated to a size of 25 μm, significantly improves the thermal stability, mechanical characteristics, and fire resistance of epoxy resin composites, thus underlining its capacity as a sustainable and efficient fire-retardant material.
