This project was done to investigate the potential of banana peel mucilage as a natural disintegrant which may encounter the problem with the existance disintegrant in term of its effectiveness, cost and biodegradable. This study included the extraction process and several physical testing. Particle Size Analyzer was used to analyze the particle size distribution of the banana peel mucilage to understand the absorption rate of the water. The pH sensitivity test was performed to identified the pH value of the sample and the hydration capacity test was done to investigate the ability of the banana peel mucilage to absorb water. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to observed morphological structure of the sample. From the iodine test, banana peel mucilage extract consists of polysaccharides which can be seen from shifted colour changed. The particle size analysis shown that the size of banana mucilage sample is very fine which may result in poor flowability. The banana extract has the neutral pH value and low hydration capacity, which still acceptable in sustain-release formulation. Next, the SEM results shown that the sample has irregular shape and variability in size, which can enhance the powder's ability to interact with water or other liquids, leading to faster water uptake. From these analyses of the physical characteristic, it is proven that banana peel mucilage has a significant potential as a natural disintegrant.
