Polymer electrolytes have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their potential applications in next-generation electrochemical devices, offering flexibility, lightweight design, and enhanced safety compared to liquid electrolytes. However, conventional polymer electrolytes often suffer from low ionic conductivity, while biobased polymer electrolytes, despite being environmentally friendly, typically exhibit poor mechanical strength and limited ionic transport performance, which restrict their practical applications. Among them, bio-based polymer electrolytes are particularly appealing, as they combine environmental sustainability with desirable electrochemical performance. This thesis focuses on the development of bio-polymer blend electrolytes (BBEs) composed of alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) doped with varying concentrations of ammonium iodide (NH₄I). The main objective is to investigate the effect of NH₄I doping on the physicochemical and ionic transport properties of the BBEs. The samples were synthesized via the solution casting technique, and characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). FTIR analysis confirmed complexation between NH4I and the polymer matrix, while DSC revealed a reduction in glass transition temperature (Tg) and improved thermal stability with increased NH4I content. Ionic conductivity measurements showed a maximum value of 1.01 × 10⁻⁵ S cm⁻¹ at 25 wt.% NH4I, with conductivity following Arrhenius behavior and exhibiting a low activation energy (Ea) of 0.14 eV. Dielectric studies indicated that enhanced conductivity was due to increases in diffusion coefficient (D), ionic mobility (μ), and charge carrier density (n). Transference number analysis using Bruce and Vincent’s method confirmed that cations were the dominant charge carriers, with a transport number of 0.45 in the highest conducting sample. Overall, these results demonstrate that NH4I-doped alginate–PVA BBEs possess promising ionic conduction and thermal properties, making them suitable candidates for application in electrochemical devices.
