The corrosion of mild steel in acidic environments remains a critical challenge in various industries, often leading to significant economic and environmental consequences. This study explores the potential of ground coffee waste, a readily available organic byproduct, as a sustainable green corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. The inhibitor was characterized and evaluated through Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurements. FTIR analysis identified key bioactive compounds, including phenolics, tannins, and caffeine, which interact with the steel surface to form a protective barrier. Contact angle measurements demonstrated improved hydrophobicity on the treated steel, indicative of enhanced resistance to corrosive agents. The findings reveal that ground coffee waste effectively reduces corrosion, offering a low-cost, eco-friendly alternative to traditional chemical inhibitors, which are often toxic and less sustainable. This research not only addresses the issue of industrial corrosion but also promotes waste valorization, aligning with circular economy principles. While the study establishes the feasibility of using coffee waste as a corrosion inhibitor, further optimization of extraction methods and industrial-scale applications is recommended. Overall, this study contributes to the development of greener, more sustainable technologies for corrosion protection.
