Kassim Selamat, a struggling musician (saxophone player) falls in love with Sabariah, a girl from a wealthy background. Although already engaged to Dr. Ismadi, Sabariah chose Kassim, much to the anger of her mother. They married, settled down in Penang, and to a life of poverty that eventually forced a pregnant Sabariah to return to her mother in Singapore. What was to be just a brief period of separation for Kassim and Sabariah was not to be. Sabariah's mother in a telegram to Kassim lied to him that Sabariah had died. Kassim in grieving for her, eventually turned blind. Sabariah meanwhile, believing that Kassim had deserted her, agreed to marry Ismadi.
