It is also known as lay-by, pull-out, and shoulders in every different country. But in this research, lay-by is the term that been used. Generally it is kept clear of all traffic and in the event of an emergency or breakdown, a motorist can pull into the lay-bys to get out of the flow of traffic and obtain the element of safety. With an increasing number of accidents each year, attention to road safety should be emphasized, while the road element is one of the causes of the accidents. So, by providing the lay-bys for every suitable bridge are one of the ways in contribute to the elements in enhancing the road safety. In this research, three (3) chosen bridges in Kuching, Sarawak that had selected based on its length and uses of the bridges. There are Santubong Bridge, Barrage Pending Bridge and Demak Laut Bridge. The main objective for this research is to study the physical characteristics of the bridges in determination of the suitable locations of the lay-bys by conducting a site observation to survey the characteristic of the bridges and other utilities at the surrounding area of the site and on the bridge crossing itself After conducting the site survey, a traffic survey (traffic counting) was conducted to determine the primary users of the bridges. By the end of this research, the suitable locations of the lay-bys on selected bridges had been determined. The locations are summarized into three (3), which are, in the middle, at both ends or staggered. -Author.
