Batch distillation has received renewed interest in world wide market for small volume, high value, and specialty chemicals has increased. While Batch Distillation is more flexible than continuous distillation because the same equipment can be used for several product and operating conditions, Batch Distillation can be less flexible when azeotropes are present in the mixture to be separated. Azeotropes can form Batch Distillation regions where the types of feasible separations can be more limited than in continuous distillation. The problem of azeotropic mixture by-products which is isopropanol-water has been studied quite extensively. The technique used in breaking azeotropes that of extractive distillation, in which one feeds a heavy component, called an entrainer, close to the column. SuperPro simulator was used to study the performance of simulation separation an azeotrope mixture, isopropanol-water. In this study, Calcium nitrate, Ca(N03)2 has been used as an entrainer. This component changes the relative volatilities of the azeotrope-forming species and pulls some of the components down the column that normally show up in the distillate. In order to separate azeotropic mixtures in general, a simulation of Salt-Added Batch Distillation via SuperPro simulator has been simulated to determine the concentration of salt that are need to break down the azeotrope point. -Author
