Bituminous surfacing was originally introduced in Malaysia more than seven decades ago. In Malaysia, most pavements failed due to structural inadequacies, rapid binder ageing under the hot sun and overloaded commercial vehicles. There is a growing concern for safety, driver's comfort, maintenance needs and environmental consideration, which has led to the demand for more durable, stronger and environmentally friendlier pavements, focusing particularly on the asphalt mixtures. Hence, many road authorities and agencies are moving away from the traditional to modem mix design which relate to the performance of the product. Modification of bitumen with rubber or polymer in road surfacing application has been used to enhance the properties of bituminous mixes. In this study, rubberwood fibre was evaluating as mineral filler in Asphalt Mix Design. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of rubberwood fibre as mineral filler in different Public Work Department (PWD) grading and to determine the best suitable grade either asphaltic concrete wearing 14 (ACBI4) or asphaltic concrete binder 14 (ACBI4) with combination of aggregate, 5% bitumen and 0.3% rubberwood fibre in asphalt mix design. Marshall Mix Design had been used to evaluate the parameters of asphaltic concrete such as stability, flow, stiffness, air voids in mix and voids in aggregate filled with bitumen. It presents some preliminary results of comparison of traditional and new proposed mix design. Based on the tests that have been carried out, it can be concluded that the addition of rubberwood fibre into asphaltic concrete binder (ACBI4) would improve the physical properties as well as the engineering characteristics of the mixture compared to the addition of rubberwood fibre into asphaltic concrete wearing 14 (ACWI4). Referring to the result of 5% bitumen content that has been carried out from this study, ACB14 is the best suitable combination of aggregate, bitumen and rubberwood fibre in asphalt mix design than ACWI4. -Author
