Infiltration generally occurs as precipitation falls on watershed or catchments area penetrates into the soil. Infiltration usually measured in unit of mm/hour. Several factors that affecting infiltration are types of soil, vegetation cover, initial soil condition, surface moisture content, soil compaction, rainfall, and temperature. Infiltration technique can be applied into a storage basin which is one of the best ways to decrease the peak value of surface runoff of an area. This study was carried out in order to determine the suitable type of storage basin for eight locations in the study area which is Gambang, Kuantan. Both retention basin and detention basin can be used for any locations but there are limitations for retention basins. In order to apply retention basin for a specific location, the infiltration rate should be not less than 13 mmJhour. Sieve analysis test were conducted to obtain the types and soil structures for each location and double ring infiltrometer test were conducted to determine the infiltration rate of each location. The soil sample sieving test result was classified using United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) in order to determine the type of soil. Equation that has been used in this study is Horton's Equation. The types of soil of the study area of this research are gravel and sand. The highest infiltration rate is 334 mm/hr was obtained at Petronas Petrol Station area and the lowest infiltration rate was obtained at Block W of Universiti Malaysia Pahang area with 20 mm/hr. The results indicated that the more spaces or voids in the soil texture, the higher the infiltration rate. All of study locations are identified suitable for retention basin. -Author
