Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007 Bricks are artificial stone and non-metallic materials that are made by pressing clay or cement in a kiln. In general, bricks are used to make a partition wall, paving and floorings but the common uses in making partition wall. Brick is ideal in term of the price and easy to handle. However, brick also have affects to the environmental and one of it is efflorescence. It cause by the deposition of soluble salt as water evaporates. The aim of this study was discover the changing of brick properties under different curing condition. Therefore, this preliminary investigation covers determination of the physical properties such as water absorption and compressive strength. In this present study, two type of clay brick block namely solid brick block (SBB) and hollow brick block (HBB) were used. Two different type of curing conditions that is tap water and Natrium Chloride (NaCl) solution were considered. Each type of curing, the specimens were curing at 7, 14 and 28 days. The compressive strength of SBB and HBB specimens were tested due to three different faces which is header, bed and stretcher. The results revealed that, the water absorption for SBB in tap water higher than those brick block an increase of curing days. The compressive strength of stretcher face of SBB displayed higher than those of brick block faces. The increases in strength increased up to 1.67 to 1.73 times than those of the SBB. Meanwhile, bed faces of HBB curing in NaCI solution give higher in strength compared to those brick block.
