This is due to certain factors such as climate change, population growth, polluted water and rapid urbanization. Therefore, a study of rainwater harvesting as an alternative water supply at Department of Irrigation and Drainage Headquarters (DID), Kuala Lumpur was conducted. The building is based at Jalan Sultan Salahuddin. The objective of research is based on the effectiveness of the rainwater harvesting system and water quality. The daily and hourly water usage at DID would also be monitored and compared with the collected rainwater volume. Five sampling points are predetermined for laboratory testing. Parameters used for the analysis were, Biological oxygen demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Dissolved Oxygen (DO) , pH, Turbidity and Total Suspended Solid (TSS). The results were compared to Interim National Water Quality Standards (INWQS) and Water quality index (WQI) from department of environement DOE (1986). The highest value for each parameter is as follow: pH is 7.27 (Class I); Turbidity is 2.83 NTU (Class I); BODs is 4.33 mg/L (Class III); COD is 0 mg/L (Class I); DO is 5.61 mg/L (Class II) and TSS is 3.83 mg/L (Class I). According to the result, the system is efficient and able to relief strain from treated water. The rainwater used is mainly for toilet flushing. -Author ER -
