It occurs when there is heavy rainfall that fills rivers and streams above their normal capacity, or if there are very high river or coastal tides that cause levels to rise or surge. The excess water that gathers cannot be restrained by normal boundaries (such as a river embankment) and follows the path of least resistance. This means areas that are low lying and close to the source of a flood will be the most vulnerable. Floods can also occur when rainwater collects on the ground and cannot find a source to drain into. A typical example is surface water run-off (for example, if you are located at the bottom of a hill or slope of ground). Localized flooding mainly happens when the ground cannot absorb any more water in a particular area, or if sewers and underground drains become blocked or cannot cope with the excess water trying to drain into them. What always will happen if flood occur at Malaysia? Firstly, life losses and second is property losses. At December 2007, the total losses when flood happen in Malaysia is approximately RM 908 million. This is included Pahang RM302 million, Johor RM185 million and Kelantan approximately RM175 million. The reasons for the looses are, late warning information and not enough rescue facilities. Fast flood phenomenon happen because of bad drainage system, long duration of rain, high rainfall intensity and lack of forest. The late warning information happens because people do not have proper warning system to warn them earlier. Lastly, not enough rescue facilities problem because people do not have enough time to find rescue facilities. In this project, the flood warning system that can detect rate of water levels changes and calculate time emaining before critical flood happen is developed.
