The objectives of this study are to design tribometer for hip joint simulator for biomedical purpose with three different types of bearing combination. In chapter one, the introduction to the tribology are presented. The chapter one gives the first view on how the tribometer can be designed so that the mechanism of the hip can be studied. The chapter two elaborate the theories and concepts according to the scopes of the study. All materials used being discussed in this chapter. Besides, the chapter three is the methodology of the study. The methodology stressed on the steps and methods how to design the tribometer. The most important part in the thesis is the results and discussion. In the chapter four, the results of the tribometer design and the finite element analysis is collected. The results also include the calculation of wear for four different types of materials which are the Stainless Steel, Alumina Al2O3, Ti6Al4V and the Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene UHMWPE. Therefore, this thesis also deals with the analysis of stress at the bearing in term of applied load to the bearing surface with finite element analysis. There are three combinations of bearing involved in this thesis which are metal-on-metal, ceramic-on-metal and polymer-on-metal combinations. The analysis involved four different types of load applied which are 50 N, 100 N, 150 N and 200 N. The results of analysis give the results the maximum stress occurred at the polymer-on metal bearing combination followed by the ceramic-on-metal and the minimum stress occurred at the metal-on-metal bearing combination. The calculation of wear rate realized that the UHMWPE give the highest ware rate which is the polymer, the Stainless Steel which is the metal give the lowest wear rate. The last chapter of this thesis which is chapter five conclude all results. The results give the better understanding at the application of tribometer and the design process in designing the tribometer for joint simulator in biomedical application ER -
