This thesis presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study of the two-phase bubbly flow in an Airlift reactor whereby the Gambit 2.3.16 and Fluent 6.3.26 was employed as modelling tools. The dispersed gas and bubbles dynamics in turbulence liquid are modeled using an Eulerian-Eulerian approach with dispersed k- turbulence model and Schiller-Naumann drag coefficient for the momentum exchange. The medium of fluid used are water and air. All bubbles are assumed to be a monodispersed with the diameter ranged from 3.4 to 4.3 mm. The CFD model predicts the spatial distribution of local gas holdup and liquid velocity profile. The local gas holdup and liquid velocity profile were compared to the experimental measurement from Couvert (2000) which was performed using a particle image velocimetry. The results from the CFD simulation show reasonably good agreement with the experimentally measurement data by Couvert (2000). Considering its predictive capability, the model developed in this work outlined in this work can provide a useful scale-up evaluation of airlift reactors.
