Reverse emulsion breaker chemicals are used to aid in the separation of oil from produced water from oil industry. This study is undertaken to develop a positively charged cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) as a reverse emulsion breaker. The cationic polyacrylamide is synthesized via dispersion polymerization of acrylamide (AM) monomer and acryloylxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC) in aqueous solution to obtained copolymer poly (acrylamide-co-acryloylxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) or poly(AM-co-DAC) with presence of water as solvent. Sodium potassium persulfate (KPS) is used as the initiator in the dispersion copolymerization. During dispersion polymerization, the cationic polymer produced precipitates from the homogeneous reaction mixture containing monomer, initiator, solvent and stabilizer. Ammonium sulphate salt, (NH4)2SO4 is used to induce the phase-out of the generated polymer by the salting-out effect. Cationic polyacrylamide produced functions as a reverse emulsion breaker that will flocculate oil in oil-in-water emulsion. Copolymer CPAM analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) shows that the copolymer synthesized only contains the quarternary ammonium and absenece of acrylamide monomer based on the spectrum obtained ER -
